Tonight we are going to delve into the CIA's Mind Control project called MK-ULTRA. For those of you maybe unaware of this program, there is reference to it in the hit TV show Stranger Things. My thanks to Kara Lee Gibson for the heads up on that one. our guest tonight and co-author of the book, along with John Selby, Blowing America's Mind: A true Story of Princeton, CIA Mind Control, and Zen, is Paul Jeffery Davids, who is a first person witness to what took place as he was one of the people experimented on. Tonight we get his firsthand account. But first as always, some context.
MKUltra was a covert operation designed and conducted by the CIA that went on from the 1950's to the early 1970's. It had the goal of developing mind-control techniques which could be used against enemies during the Cold War. The CIA made use of existing psychiatric facilities most associated with universities such as Princeton and yes in Canada, McGill at the Allen memorial Psychiatric Hospital. The subjects, many of which were unwitting, suffered extensive use of psychedelic drugs, physical and mental abuse, sleep deprivation and malnourishment, among many other experiments. In all there were 149 MKUltra subprojects dealing with behavioral modification. A further 33 subprojects were funded under MKUltra that were not related to this type of research. we will never know what these projects were about.

Funny Story - Bobby was a closer to his mom than his dad. Lem Billings a close Bobby friend commented that the only similarity between Robert and Joe Sr. was their eye color. Bobby, like his mom, became a devout Catholic. here's a funny story about how Bobby as a little boy tried to impress his parents. Bobby, like most kids in that era , had a paper route. What he didn't tell his parents is that he had the family chauffeur drive him in the family Rolls Royce. The parents found out and thus ended Bobby's venture in to the newspaper business.

Get the coffee going, get the tea going or a beverage of choice. As I drove into the studio tonight I looked over magnificent Lake Ontario. The scenery in Kingston is stunningly beautiful. However last summer Kingston experienced a drought and water was rationed. We live on Lake Ontario, folks, a great lake, and water was rationed. Think about that for a second. This winter was the weakest winter I have ever seen. Very little snow and temperatures so high, normal areas of Lake Ontario that usually freeze, didn't. So what does that mean? Well, it means that ice that would normally cover and protect this huge body of water from the suns ray and reflect them back, thus preventing evaporation, didn't happen. When this Lake goes down an inch, well think about that as well, that's a lot of water. Our spring is late this year, by about a month, normal weather patterns are disrupted as never before, we are seeing more and more signs of global warming across the globe. Extreme weather, draughts that never had droughts, floods where flood never occur, warm winters, hottest blazing summers, all are evidence something is a miss.

Early morning, April four, Shot rings out in the Memphis sky. Free at last, they took your life, They could not take your pride. Those of course are the lyrics to U2's famous song Pride: In the name of Love. A quick explanation of the lyrics. Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis on April 4th 1968. His name is "King" and therefore, poetically, his followers could be considered his "pride" ; as that is what lions in a group are referred to. What is most important, is the line from the song that says: they could not take your pride. They didn't stop the Civil Rights movement with the murder of Dr King. The Civil Rights movement was bigger than any one man. It was just. It was right and its time was neigh.

It is Winter January 1959 -30 degrees Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit), The Ural Mountains deep in the heart of Mother Russia, which was then the Soviet Union. It is the height of the Cold War and the threat of Nuclear Holocaust is ever present on the world's minds. There is a blizzard roaring on Mount Kholat Syakhl , Now an aside about the Mountain. There is a local legend from the local indigenous people The Mansi, which has been handed down as a warning from generation to generation. It is perhaps chilling that the name Mount Kholat Syakhl, translates to English as the "Mountain of the Dead". As the legend goes, during a hunting excursion, 9 Mansi hunters decided it was in their best interests to make camp and stay overnight on this location due to a blizzard that came up out of nowhere. A situation that remains to today. The following day, all nine were found dead. None showed any signs of trauma. Their deaths unexplained. Consequently the mountain became regarded as cursed and the Mansi avoid it.
10 hikers make their way onto Mount Kholat Syakhl on what was supposed to be a fun filled trip. A day into the excursion, one of the members took ill and decided to return home. The remaining nine continued.
Up to 28 January 1959, everything can be independently verified about the Group's journey. Beyond that date and despite the presence of a Group diary and photographs, nothing can be verified.
When search parties found their tent, they saw that the side of the tent had been slashed and footsteps led away from it in deep snow. All of their belongings had been left, indicating a hasty escape from the tent. The first bodies were found to have died of hypothermia. The remaining bodies were found weeks later and were found to have no external marks, but internal injuries. One of the two females in the group was found to have her tongue missing. And radiation was detected on clothes.
There appeared to be no rational explanation for the circumstances of their deaths. The final report ultimately blamed the deaths on and I quote: "An unknown compelling force which the hikers were unable to overcome".
Fast forward 57 years to again January, just last year at this very time once again, 2016 and the body of a lone 50 years old man is discovered by another group of tourists. This time it was called in via satellite phone. Now why a body left alone remains a mystery, as does it all.
I feel as though I have watched our guest tonight grow up before our eyes on screen starring in his dad's, Oliver Stone's film JFK, Natural Born Killers, and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, before becoming a director in his own right with Greystone Park. The movie was based on Stone’s experiences of exploring haunted mental asylums.
